Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) blasted President Trump for demanding an oath of loyalty from James Comey, saying the fired FBI director only owed the oath to the Constitution.
“The oath was to the Constitution of the United States, not to an individual. It’s completely inappropriate,” Harris said of the demand allegedly made by Trump, according to a detailed account released Wednesday by Comey.
Harris said Comey’s written statement ahead of a Senate Intelligence Committee hearing on Thursday validates news reports that she said had raised questions over whether Trump may have obstructed justice by interfering with an FBI probe into Russia’s involvement in the election, and into former national security adviser Michael Flynn’s business dealings.
Asked if there is a sufficient case against Trump for obstruction of justice, Harris replied, “There’s no question we have to get to the truth of what’s going on.”
Harris is a member of the Senate Intelligence Committee and will be one of the members asking questions to Comey at Thursday’s hearing
